Remarks:
The home at 2 Garden Terrace is located in a neighborhood that was platted by E.W. Grove in the 1920s and is part of a nationally-recognized historic district. The historic significance of the area is closely tied to its unique architecture, as homes in the district are excellent representatives of the Bungalow/Craftsman, Tudor Revival and Colonial Revival styles of architecture. The great variety of architectural styles represented by the houses reflect the tastes of the business and political leaders for whom they were built, as well as the skill of local architects and builders.
Built in the Colonial Revival style, but reflecting Craftsman influences, the home at 2 Garden Terrace was constructed in the 1920s for William Benzing, an executive with Champion Paper Company. While key architectural features remain substantially in their original condition, renovations have been performed over the years to keep the home in a good condition and to meet modern desires. Some of the more significant renovations include the following:

Since the home is located in an historic district, qualifying renovations currently are eligible for the North Carolina historic tax credit, which can reduce the amount of state income taxes the homeowner may otherwise be obligated to pay.
